No matter how old you are, you can probably still hear your mother’s voice yelling at you to brush and floss your teeth. As annoying as this might have been back then, our mothers had a good point. Keeping up good dental habits has a number of benefits, and it can prevent serious, and expensive, dental issues down the road. If you haven’t been attending regular check ups at your local dentist’s office, or haven’t been practicing good dental habits, you run the risk of not only medical issues, but cosmetic ones as well.

  1. Tooth Decay – The most important reason for properly taking care of your is to avoid tooth decay and other tooth diseases. Bad dental habits can cause teeth to erode, and damage from neglect can be irreversible. You can avoid tooth decay by brushing and flossing twice a day and keeping foods and drinks high in sugar out of your diet. Tooth enamel might be the body’s hardest surface, but it can’t fight the damaging effects of sugary drinks and snacks. Those who drink three or more sugary beverages a day suffer from 62% more enamel decay.
  2. Bad Breath – Bad breath, or halitosis, is often times an indication of poor dental hygiene, and it can also be a symptom of tooth diseases. Over 80% of people who suffer from halitosis have an underlying dental issue causing their bad breath. Brushing and flossing teeth regularly not only prevents such dental issues, but it also gets rid of plaque and food particles that can also contribute to persistent halitosis.
  3. Embarrassing Smile – Poor dental hygiene can also lead to a number of cosmetic issues, including tooth loss, misalignment and noticeable gaps between teeth. Most people consider their smile to be one of their most important attributes, and when these issues arise it can make people hold back from smiling and socializing. In order to restore their smile, many people turn to cosmetic dental procedures. Since they are not typically covered by dental plans, these procedures can be very expensive for patients.

Brushing and flossing only take a few minutes out of your day, and most dental plans cover two dental cleanings a year, so there is no excuse to avoid the dentist. Dental problems like tooth decay, bad breath and a crooked or toothless smile can easily be avoided by taking good care of your teeth. See this link for more references.
