Going to the dentist is a normal part of life, but, as with any profession, there are generalists and there are specialists. From deep teeth cleanings to laser teeth whitening to full dental replacements, the variety of reasons for a trip to the dentist can be daunting, and the best dentist in one area may not be the best dentist for them all.
The majority of people who visit their local dentist go in for routine checkups and cleanings. Any good dentist can perform these tasks, and many of them also fill cavities as needed and provide rudimentary whitening, usually through chemical means (also called “bleaching”). Many offices have only a handful of dentists who see patients of all ages, while other, more diverse offices may have separate pediatric dentists on staff.
If you’re looking for more advanced whitening techniques, such as laser whitening or veneers, you may need to venture into the world of cosmetic dentistry. While cosmetic dentists also perform routine checkups as part of their initial exam, the reverse is not always true, and dentists who normally do routine checkups don’t always offer more advanced services and procedures.
And if you end up needing dentures or implants of any kind, you will most certainly need to call on an dental surgeon. Implants are installed directly into the jawbone in order to anchor replacement teeth, plates, or entire denture sets firmly in place, and that requires advanced training and a specialized facility.
Even if you don’t yet need any extreme dental procedures, it’s a good idea to know where the best dentists in your area are who perform those procedures, in case an emergency comes up. And the best place to get that info would be… you guessed it, from your regular dentist at your next scheduled cleaning. More research here.
