Taking care of your teeth is something that you probably consider to be second nature by now. As you’ve gotten older, you may have begun realizing that you’re willing to put more time and energy into dental care than before.
It’s normal to feel this way, and you’re certainly not the only person who has neglected regular teeth cleanings and flossing for years on end. But if you’ve gotten really dedicated in your new healthy teeth endeavor, you might actually be harming your teeth — smothering them with love, if you will — through too much enthusiasm. Like most things, if you’re trying to take care of your teeth or even take care of dentures or implants, moderation is key.
So how might you be hurting your teeth?
- Too much brushing. If you brush your teeth too often or use a toothbrush with hard bristles, you might actually be causing the enamel on your teeth to wear off.
- Using your teeth as a tool for any task other than eating. Everyone has done it — opened a plastic bag of chips with their teeth, taken off a pen cap with their teeth, maybe even pried off a metal bottle cap that has been pressure-sealed. Your teeth
are tools, but they aren’t necessarily meant for these situations. Not only are you likely to encounter chipped or fractured teeth at some point, but you might even damage your teeth enough to require some cosmetic dentures or dental implants.
- Too many attempts at whitening teeth. Everyone wants to have the brightest smile possible, but it shouldn’t come as a surprise that over-the-counter teeth whitening methods can be harmful to your teeth if you use them with professional supervision. Even the best teeth whitening products offered by professionals can be harmful if used too often.
The best thing to do to make sure you’re taking good care of your teeth is to visit an experienced dentist or denturist (if you have cosmetic dentures or implants) for an evaluation and for future cleaning advice.
